Red Crossers Provide Assistance to Eastern Kentucky Residents Impacted by Flooding

Melody Kirkland was living in Jackson, KY when flood waters forced her to evacuate where she was staying. “It’s overwhelming and I’m dealing with quite a bit. They [Red Cross] feed us good and I’m doing good and holding it together the best I can.”

Melody was evacuated from the Jackson area and sheltered at the Red Cross Wolfe County High School but says she doesn’t have family in the area and is uncertain with what the future holds. We will be there with Melody, now and in the days and weeks ahead. Trained volunteers who specialize in casework will help people like Melody begin to chart their next steps towards recovery by connecting them to localized resources to bridge gaps that will assist in their recovery efforts.

Today, more than 350 trained Red Cross disaster workers are on the ground in Kentucky helping to provide a safe place to stay, food to eat and emotional support for those affected by this tragedy. Volunteers are also helping to replace prescription medications, eyeglasses or critical medical equipment that were left behind in the rush to get to safety. If you have been impacted by the recent floods, please call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
