Makayla and Roger Sammons were at their home in Estill County when the floods began. They knew they needed to evacuate and had many animals to take care of. “We were handing the dogs off to people to get them out,” said Makayla. “We had to carry our hamster above our heads. The water started out at our waist and got up to our chest. I went back for our fish and my husband said ‘you can’t go back in there. You will be swimming.”

Grieving two family members who tragically lost their lives in the Kentucky floods, Roger and Makayla Sammons are seeking safe refuge and warm meals at a Red Cross shelter. Makayla was very transparent about the grief they were experiencing and her gripping fears of having to return to clean up their home and leaning on family members to help with those efforts. She says she is hoping to find new living arrangements in an area not prone to flooding.

Makayla reflected on what had been lost, saying, “It is traumatizing. Everything is gone. Our recliner, loveseat, and TVs were all sentimental items from birthdays and people who have passed away.” The couple was able to save their dogs, hamster, and bearded dragon. Their dogs and hamster are with them in the shelter.

Makayla and Roger have plans to move into an apartment that is safe from flooding. Their home was positioned at the lowest point of a trailer park, so their families kept expressing gratitude that they got out. “They kept saying ‘we are glad you’re okay.”

Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the floods in Eastern Kentucky. Sharing these stories is not easy, and we appreciate Makayla and Roger for allowing us to listen. The Red Cross has Disaster Mental Health teams which are out in the impacted areas, providing comfort and professional counseling for those who need it.
